Chapter 14

Now

Delilah stood behind the bar in a red shirt that the handsome blond Brooks had given her and a pair of cut-off jeans. Brooks walked her through everything she needed to know about the bar, and she listened intently, even though this wasn’t her first rodeo. She had been a lot of things over the years; a bartender, a waitress, a maid, and even a flight attendant. This wasn’t what she had intended to do with her life. She once had huge dreams, and somehow they had gone wrong.

The doorbell rang, and a woman walked in. Her red hair was in a messy bun, and her blue eyes were sparkling. Delilah could feel her heart stop once she recognized the face. Indigo had grown up, the years of stress already showing on her young face, but she was as beautiful as ever. This had been a face she had loved for so long that when Indigo stopped in front of the bar, it took a minute for Delilah to even find her voice.

“Hey there, how can I help you?” Delilah smiled her most radiant smile.

“Hi, I’m Indigo. I am the Manager of this bar, and I live upstairs. You can call me Go.” Indigo smiled the best she could. Delilah was pretty, but she seemed familiar. “I know this is weird to ask, but have we met before?”

“No, I don’t think we have, and you can call me Del. I wandered into town looking for a friend, and someone said you would probably be able to help, so I came into the bar, and that gorgeous River Keeper told me you weren’t available at the moment. I asked if this place was hiring, and now here I am.” She smiled again, her soft southern accent much more noticeable this time.

“That gorgeous guy forgot to tell me he had hired a new person until this morning, so I wanted to come and meet you myself.” Indigo sat on a stool and looked around. The bar was dead, as it was most Sundays when there wasn’t a sports game on. She had missed it, though. She looked at Del again. Her face was familiar, but in a way that her features were ordinary. There was one exception: the light red scar running down her face. Indigo knew that if she had known this woman before, she would remember that scar forever. “Who did you say you were looking for?”

“An old buddy of mine. I think you may have known him.” Del reached under the bar and handed Indigo a beer, taking one for herself.

“You’re not allowed to drink behind the bar,” Indigo said, watching Del take a long sip.

“What’s a drink between new friends?” Del asked, taking another small sip.

“So, who are you looking for?” Indigo asked. There was something uneasy about this woman. Her talent was nagging her, begging to be used and to figure out the mystery, but she pushed it down. Tomorrow, she was going to make sure that Brooks fired her.
